Anime is an abbreviation of the word "animation". Outside
Japan, the term most popularly refers to animation originating in Japan. To the
West, not all animation is considered anime; and anime is considered subset of
animation.
While some anime is hand drawn, computer assisted
animation techniques have become quite common in recent years. Like any
entertainment medium, the story lines represent most major genres of fiction.
Anime is broadcast on television, distributed on media such as DVD and VHS, and
included in computer and video games. Additionally, some are produced as full
length motion pictures. Anime often draws influence from Japanese comic books,
called manga, and light novels. Some anime storylines have been adapted into
live action films and television series.
An anime convention is a somewhat loose
term used to describe any event or gathering in a venue where the primary focus
is on anime and manga as an industry or as a fan event. This event can take a
variety of forms, but in most English speaking countries it is thought of as a
fan driven all-day event gathering of fans to celebrate or participate in anime
fandom with like minded people, usually at a large hotel's convention meeting
space. Some have also been held on college campuses and dedicated
conference/civic centers. It can also describe industry driven events in which
studios and publishers hype their anime related releases, or even
dealer-marketplace type events which are totally consumer based.
In the particular anime convention that
we are hosting we will also have pen and paper table top games like Dungeons and
Dragons. These are games that center on strategy, fantasy, and role playing. We
will also be reserving booths and stations for video game play.
Anime is becoming increasingly popular
in America. Tens of thousands of anime conventions have been held nationwide.
Anime conventions are especially popular in the San Francisco Bay Area. One of
the biggest anime conventions is held in the city of San Jose called
FanimeCon. We know by hosting this event major attention would be drawn from
this event toward Chabot College.
